Tennis Team Will Set Lofty Goal
Brandi Fausett will assume the role of head tennis coach at Byron Nelson High School next school year, and the former Lewisville High School assistant said the goal for the spring season is quite simple — to make it to state.

The tennis team will compete at the varsity level in the spring season of 2010, and Fausett said the expectations for her program are quite high.

"We have one goal, and that is to go to state in May down in Austin," Fausett said. "That is our goal, and that is what we are going to work toward all season."

Fausett said a couple of things appealed to her about the Byron Nelson head coaching position.

"It is a very nice campus, and it gives me the opportunity to start a program and build a sense of pride and tradition," Fausett said.

Fausett coached the last two seasons at Lewisville High School, and spent three years before that coaching at Ore City High School near Longview.

Fausett said she believes the players in her program have a great opportunity this coming year.

"I am very optimistic," Fausett said. "I think it is a great opportunity for the freshmen and sophomores who, if they were at another school, would not get the opportunity to play varsity at the UIL level for four straight years.

"My focus is to find the kids who have a goal, and I know how to teach them how to win."

Fausett has coached three top USTA players and one two-time state champion at the 3A level.

Fausett said she hopes to establish a strong youth program for Byron Nelson, as well.

"I want to get into the middle schools and hopefully the elementary schools," Fausett said. "As of right now, we plan to start a junior development program out of the school that will have a tennis pro that would come in in the evenings after we’ve finished with high school practice.

"I hope to target kids as early as second or third grade and build that all the way up."

Fausett said she looks for a couple of things from her players.

"I want somebody who is hard working and motivated," Fausett said. "I want my players to be dedicated and be willing to set goals.

"I think, because it is an individual sport, that it is important I get to spend time with each and every one of my players so that we can spend time working on what they need to work on."
