Girl's and Boy's Basketball will maintain separate booster groups under NISD structure changes for 2009-10. As a result, a new booster group has been built exclusively for the girls.

Wilson Makes Move to Byron Nelson Girls Basketball

Darren Wilson was recently hired as the first girls basketball coach at Byron Nelson High School, and Wilson said he is looking forward to the opportunity of starting up a new program.

Wilson comes to Byron Nelson from Northwest High School, where he was an assistant basketball coach after coaching at Argyle and Grapevine.

"Getting to know the athletic director, Susan Elza, she and I went to high school together, and being good friends with her and knowing what she stood for and believed in and the amount of support that the administration has given made me think that this is definitely a place that I want to be," Wilson said.

"The support from the administration and faculty is so important. It is probably more, here, than anything I have ever seen."

Wilson said he thinks building a new program will be easier for him, because he has kind of already done that at another school.

"When I first had the job at Grapevine, it was kind of the same thing," Wilson said. "They hadn’t won, and it was a program that basically needed to be rebuilt, so I have kind of been there before."

Wilson said one of the things that impresses him is the fan support the school already seems to have.

"I don’t think I have seen more bumper stickers or Byron Nelson Bobcats stickers at any other school," Wilson said.

Wilson said it will be an adjustment for him to go from coaching at the varsity level to non-varsity, but said it is not anything he cannot handle.

"You attack it from the same perspective," Wilson said. "We’re teaching fundamentals, and wins and losses are not going to be the main focal point. As a varsity coach, that kind of was [that] you wanted to get into the playoffs.

"Right now, we are building for two years down the road. We’re learning how to do it right, and we are here to establish a mentality that will serve us well in the long run."

Wilson was an assistant on an Argyle basketball team that made regular trips deep into the playoffs.

Wilson said he has certain expectations for his players at Byron Nelson.

"I look for kids that are going to be aggressive and are willing to try the things that we are trying to implement," Wilson said. "I want kids that are going to be hustlers and who will go out there and give me 100 percent efforts every time."
