Limited varsity participation has not prevented Byron Nelson High School from setting a goal of establishing booster clubs in every sport by the end of August.

The Bobcats football play junior varsity schedules in 2009, but both teams have booster club presidents and are currently recruiting new members.

Football Booster Club President Terry Flickinger said things are starting to come together for the football boosters and said, for the first year at least, the club will do whatever the Byron Nelson coaching staff need.

"We asked the coach to give us a wish list of stuff he’d like to see, and that can be anything from helping out with providing fruit for practices, to inspirational messages posted in the locker room," Flickinger said.

Flickinger said the booster club is going to have a couple of events to try to increase membership and raise funding in the month of August.

"We’ve got a big event coming up on Aug. 14, which is our Meet the Coach night, where families can come out and meet the coaching staff," Flickinger said.

The football boosters will be having a cookout from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Byron Nelson High School where Flickinger said parents are also invited to join the booster club.

The football booster club will also have a Golf Tournament Fundraiser on Aug. 24 at the Champions Circle Golf Course, which is the football boosters primary fundraiser for the year.

Van Alstyne offensive coordinator Byron Bode is following Brian Polk to run the offense. He will also coach track.

BNHS also picked Trinity defensive coordinator Coy Brown to be the program’s first defensive coordinator. Brown had been the architect to the Trojans producing one of the toughest defenses in the area. He helped Trinity win the 2007 Division I state championship and get to the 5A Division I state semifinals in 2008.

Meanwhile, Grapevine head athletic trainer Doug Barnes will assume the same role at Byron Nelson, while Van Alstyne offensive line coach Todd St. John will operate the power lifting program.
