Byron Nelson cross country and track and field coach Steve McBride said he is excited about starting up a new program at the school this year and said that unlike other sports, if he can field a competitive team this fall, the Bobcats may compete at the varsity level.

McBride comes to Nelson from Williams Preparatory school in Dallas, where he helped start their cross country and track and field programs as well.

"With this being a new school, and the school district it is in with the Northwest ISD, they take everything they do seriously," McBride said. "They provide you with the facility and financial means to build a program and be successful."

Williams Prep is also a young school, and McBride helped build up its cross country and track and field programs.

"It was a second-year school," McBride said. "I just helped create and kind of lay the ground work for it."

McBride was also coach at Bishop Lynch for a number of years, where he had great success as well.

"I took over the program there in 1998-1999, and I was fortunate enough to win five track and field state championships," McBride said.

McBride said there are a couple of objectives for next year at Byron Nelson.

"We want to lay a foundation and get kids out and get kids excited about being a part of it," McBride said. "I want these to be the sports that kids want to be in."

McBride said the two main things he looks for in athletes are coachability and desire.

While most of the programs at Byron Nelson will be playing a non-varsity schedule this season, McBride said that may not necessarily be the case for the cross country and track teams.

"In cross country and track and field, we are going to have the opportunity to run varsity this year," McBride said. "We are going to be in a 3A district, and if we are capable of competing at a varsity level, we are going to go ahead and try to do it.

"That’s going to depend a lot on the number of kids, and it may take a while to get it going. I’ll be out beating the halls and doing whatever I can to get the kids out, but it’ll happen. I’ve been in this position before."
