Girl's and Boy's Soccer will maintain separate booster groups under NISD structure changes for 2009-10. As a result, a new booster group has been built exclusively for the girls.

Bobcats Boys Soccer to be Led by Experience Howard Putter will lead the Bobcats soccer program at Byron Nelson.
Howard Putter’s coaching career spans more than two decades and three different schools, and as the new Byron Nelson boys soccer coach, Putter is optimistic about what the Bobcats program can become.

Putter most recently coached at Fossil Ridge High School in Keller and said the Byron Nelson position appealed to him for a couple of reasons.

"One thing is it’s about half as far as where I was driving before," Putter said. "My kids are getting older, and they are going to school in Carrollton, so this gives me the opportunity to see them do some things."

Putter was the coach at Fossil Ridge for the last 14 years, Keller High School for three years and El Paso High School for seven years.

Putter’s teams have been impressive along the way.

"This will be my 24th year of coaching soccer as a head coach, with 22 years in varsity competition, and I’ve started two new high schools," Putter said. " My teams have made the playoffs in 21 out of 22 years, and my 1988 El Paso High team got to the final four in the state."

Putter said he does not anticipate a difficult transition to playing a non-varsity schedule, as he has done it in the past.

"I actually did it when I first started at Fossil Ridge," he said. "Even though we were not a varsity squad, I petitioned the district and didn’t get in, but we still played a varsity schedule.

"It is going to be different. I am going to miss the varsity competition, but I think it will be good for a year to build and get things ready."

Putter said he believes that a couple of things will make this season a successful one.

"I think just getting to know the kids and having a good schedule that is competitive is what we are looking for," Putter said. "We don’t want to play anyone that we can beat really easily or anyone who can really put it to us. We want to be competing every game, and that is how you get better."

Putter said there are certain qualities he looks for in his players, as well.

"I look for kids that are good students and do what they are supposed to do in the classroom," Putter said. "I also look for kids that are willing to work hard, and do the best they can."

Welcome to our new boys soccer coach, Howard Putter. With so much experience under your belt, I'm sure you will be great for our boys and our school.

Soccer Complex a Step Closer

The Roanoke Soccer Complex welcomes team play when the facility opens in spring 2010.

Plans for the $2.2-million project moved forward recently with Dean Construction Inc. chosen as construction manager at risk for the facility, set to occupy land just south of the Roanoke Recreation Center.

A 200-space parking lot will adjoin the recreation center’s parking lot, welcoming athletes and fans alike to a resource expected to provide much-needed space for soccer enthusiasts.

"Our plan is for it to be open to the community and the Trophy Club-Roanoke Soccer Association," said City Manager Jimmy Stathatos. "We envision hosting games as well as tournaments."

But practice is not among the facility’s planned uses.

"Practice would mean wear and tear," Stathatos said. "It would undermine the integrity of the fields."

Though practice would be prohibited, the facility will accommodate many layout options. From two regulation-sized fields to four U-10 fields, eight U-8 fields and 16 U-6 fields, several field variations will meet different needs.

For years, area athletic leagues have bemoaned the dearth of soccer space, and Roanoke officials hope the complex offers some help.
