Girl's and Boy's Basketball will maintain separate booster groups under NISD structure changes for 2009-10. As a result, a new booster group has been built exclusively for the girls.

Curran Brings Winning Tradition to Boys Basketball Program

The Northwest school sistrict recently hired Scott Curran to become the first boys head basketball coach at Byron Nelson High School, and Curran said he is looking forward to a couple of things about the position.

"I think the resources at Byron Nelson are going to be second to none," Curran said. "Obviously, the Trophy Club area is a great community with a lot of support, and I am just looking forward to the challenge of building a new program."

Curran coached at Kennedale High School for a year and Fort Worth Brewer for six years, and most recently coached at Denison High School for the last five years.

As a head coach, Curran’s teams were pretty impressive.

"Out of my nine years as a head coach, seven of them have been winning seasons," Curran said. "Denison advanced to the second round of the playoffs for the past three years in a row, and I’ve coached two Division I players at Denison."

Curran said he does not anticipate much of a transition from coaching at the varsity level to heading up a non-varsity squad this coming season.

"We are going to treat them the same," Curran said. "No matter what grades they are in, we are preparing them for varsity play. We are going to dive into this thing full blast and get it rolling from the start. We won’t treat the kids any different, and before you know it, we’ll be playing varsity competition."

Curran said a couple of things will make his inaugural season a successful one.

"I think we’ve got to establish an identity, and we have to be competitive," Curran said. "We have to make sure that we do the detailed things the right way, and just put in some really good ground level fundamentals and basic understandings of the program and where we need to get it."

Curran said he looks for a couple of qualities in his players.

"I expect my players to represent Byron Nelson with class," Curran said. "I expect them to compete each time they step onto the floor and give me everything they’ve got each time we play."
